Home Sweet Home

Thanks to my littlest sister, who is a driving champion, we made it home safely.  I think she drove for 20 of the 30 hours it took us to get home.  And, despite staying in a seedy motel and getting stuck in weekend Denver traffic, we made it home all in one piece.  Most of us still had smiles on our faces.

We made it home just in time to register the girls for middle school.  Four hundred dollars later and after thirty minutes of trying to explain to one of the sixth-graders in our family that it does matter whether you turn your locker combination to the left or the right, we feel ready for the school year to begin.  Especially me.

My brother, though, has made the beginning of this school year even more fun.  I get to fly to his wedding the day after school starts.  This will be especially fun for King, who will still be here on the second day of school when the girls come home with lists of things that they cannot live without.  Lucky King.  And, poor me, I will be on the mountainside at a wedding and then lying about at my aunt's quiet house or attending BYU Education Week.  Life is so unfair. :)  Really, I do feel badly I won't be here for the beginning of school, but I am so excited for my brother and I have been wanting to go to Education Week for a few years now.  If only it could be at a better time.  But, we'll muddle through, and I'm sure that King will handle the misery of parenting three middle-school girls alone just fine.

As for the next week, we plan to stop eating like we are on vacation and figure out if we have any clothes that fit us anymore.  Also, we will try our hardest to get pictures of our vacation up for the two people that read this and care.  For the other two of you, don't worry, I'm pretty sure that the girls did all of the photography, which means there are not many pictures you'll have to sift through,  :)

Well, That's New

We need to stop driving to Utah.  I'm not sure that saving the money to drive instead of forking over the big bucks to fly is panning out for us.  Every time we drive, we buy a new car.  Today is no exception.  We traded in our van and bought my mom's Freestyle.  We love it, and the girls fit better in it, too.  My dad loves buying new cars, so we're helping him out, too. :)

We had a great time in Las Vegas with King's family.  I can tell you one thing, though, migraines and casino buffet's do not mix so well.  Loud, smoky, loud, crazy. Boy, do they not mix.  I tried so hard to pretend to feel good, but no one bought it.  The good thing is, I powered through, ate a lot, and probably gained about five pounds, so I have proof that I was there.  Because my skin is still as white as the pure driven snow, so there's no proving it that way.  Swimming and migraines don't really mix either.

Now we have been hanging out with my parents.  Buying cars and other things like that.  Eating ice cream.  Swimming (not me). Eating ice cream.  Going to movies.  And eating ice cream.  Come to think of it--maybe those Vegas buffets don't have a lot to do with those five extra pounds...

On Vacation

You may have noticed that I have been a little absent on the blog front lately.  We're on vacation.  We're having a great time, but I don't have much energy left for blogging.  We have visited generous family and friends in Oscaloosa, IA, Lincoln, NE, Laramie, WY, Orem, UT, and Kayesville, UT.  We still have Las Vegas, NV, St. George, UT, Colorado Springs, CO, and Kansas City, MO on our list for the next two weeks.  (It sort of wears me out just thinking about it.)

We are so grateful for our family and friends who are kind enough to let us bunk in their houses (including an aunt an uncle who moved into their beautiful new home just last week, and I now sit typing in their guest bedroom.)  The girls have loved every minute, and have made themselves at home trying out video game systems, sampling delicious food, arguing just like at home, jumping on trampolines, playing games, and helping with an early morning paper route.

We're all glad to have 28 of the nearly 64 hours of driving under our belt.  Books on tape have helped the time pass more quickly.  We loved The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale, and are now enjoying Science Fair by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson.  I haven't quite convinced them that they'll love Sarah, Plain and Tall, the third CD book I checked out from the library before leaving, but I'm hoping the prospect of staring out the window at long stretches of Kansas will convince them to give it a try, as it is one I remember loving as a girl.

So, it's likely I'll be scarce around these parts as we vacation.  So many people to see and not enough hours to do it in makes for a busy schedule that I have a hard time keeping up with.  But, I do hope to document some of it eventually, for posterity's sake, anyway.  In the meantime, I hope you enjoy your summer, and think of me fondly when your children argue on the way to the grocery store--it could be worse, you could be trapped in that car with them for 64 hours! :)

Scrumptious

A little bit ago, King ran out of his favorite body wash.  He bought a new one.  And it is not the same.  It really smells yucky.  I don't like it, he doesn't like it.  I'm sure it smells fine, but I am just allergic enough to something in it that it kind of makes me want to sneeze every time he comes near me.  Which is why he doesn't like it.

So, where is the offensive body wash?  Well, it's in the garbage now.  But until two days ago, it was still in our shower.  Because I keep forgetting to buy some more.  And, to help me remember (I'm sure this isn't why, but it seems plausible) to buy more, the little lid on the body wash somehow malfunctioned and poured the stuff all over our shower.  And so I threw it away.  But.  But our bathroom now smells like "Sport Fresh" and somehow the body wash seeped into our porous soap and so now I smell sport fresh.  And so, after two days of smelling like a (sneezing) man, I'm pretty sure I will remember to pick some up today.  And put new soap in the shower.  (Hopefully.  I keep forgetting, except for when I am in the shower.  And now.  But I am sure I will forget as soon as I stand up.  Anyway...)

And this morning, as I was smelling very masculine, applying my make up, I thought, Blech.  I should have showered in the girls' shower...and then it hit me...

On Friday night, my aunt and uncle came to visit for a night.  They stayed in Cinderella's room, and used the girls' shower.  The shower that has no bar of soap.  Just a delightful selection of  body washes for teens and pre-teens.  My poor uncle.  I don't recall smelling which one he went with, but I am sure that when my aunt was in the car with him for their ten hour ride, she could have told me if he picked Gingerbread Castles, Princess Pink Frosting, Ball Gown Bubble Gum, or Kiwi Kisses.  Oh, my poor uncle.
